The John Moore Museum
This museum was developed in memory of the writer and naturalist John Moore, whose knowledge and love of the countryside was paramount.
Moore was born and brought up in Tewkesbury and is best known as a countryside writer and conservationist. A man ahead of his time, he was writing about the mismanagement of the countryside in the middle of the 20th century, warning that harsh treatment of the land and animals would destroy the balance of nature.
‘It is not entirely out of the question that despite man’s ingenuity the insects might beat us in the end. If they do it will be because we haven’t used our biological knowledge, but instead have employed chemists as our hired assassins to kill our fellow creatures in their cave-man fashion, ignorantly, wantonly, wastefully.’(The Year of the Pigeons 1963)
Step back in time with our beautifully restored 15th century Tudor shop and home. This small house contains a shop, bedroom, living hall and workshop. Outside is the small, but charming, garden complete with grass seat.
Use our new audio wands to listen to voices from the past and the present. Our Tudor family will tell you about living and working in their household. You can also hear the voices of previous tenants from the 20th century, a fascinating insight to a close and much missed community.
Delve into our four new Tudor character boxes and discover fascinating artifacts…will you be able to tell what they were all used for?
Plus - you can wander in our peaceful secret garden, or explore our tree trail in the grounds of Tewkesbury Abbey.
