Dr Jenner's House: Birthplace of Vaccination
Steeped in history, Berkeley has changed the world: the Chantry, an elegant 18th century house, is the former home of world renowned scientist and polymath,
Dr Edward Jenner (1749-1823).
It was from here in 1796 that Jenner developed the world’s first vaccine, saving millions of lives. Vaccination now touches all our lives. His work also encompassed hibernation, bird migration, geology and ballooning. This historic house and gardens celebrates Jenner’s life and legacy.
Highlights include: introductory film; Jenner’s Study; Scullery; Attic tours (by appointment); ‘Hot House’/Vinery; and thatched ‘Templeof Vaccinia’. Refreshments in the Garden Café in adjacent Old Cyder House; children’s activities and trails.
New for 2011: Audio-guides;Temple of Vaccinia re-launched after major restoration.
