The National Waterways Museum, Gloucester Docks

National Waterways Museum The canals in the eighteenth century were like our motorways today. The hard toil in building and working these waterways enabled the industrial revolution that put Britain at the centre of world trade.

So who worked on the waterways? People from all different backgrounds - rich and poor. The rich were investors and the brains behind the development of the canals, while the working classes gave hard labour as navvies and boatmen.

At this award-winning, recently refurbished museum, you can discover the history of the people that worked on the waterways, the environment around the waterways and get on board some examples of the boats of the waterways. As part of the refurbishment the hands-on element has been enhanced to encourage more family participation, which is strengthened with events throughout the year.
