Dean Heritage Centre, Forest of Dean
Nestled in five acres of the scenic Forest of Dean is an old mill - a
special place waiting to be discovered where you can explore the story
of the forest and its people, from the earliest times to the present
day. Here, you can find out how the Romans turned the area into an
iron-producing power, share in the adventure of Royal Medieval Hunts
and uncover how Nelson helped to save the Forest from destruction. In
the 19th Century Forester's cottage you can step back in time - imagine
braving a cold winter as you sit by the open fire and keeping the
Gloucestershire Old Spot pigs that live in the cottage garden.
The
Dean Heritage Centre is home to 20,000 unique and historic objects that
you can explore through modern galleries and children's activities.
There's also an art gallery, a working waterwheel, adventure playground
and picnic sites.
Throughout the year there are special
events that really shouldn't be missed. These include cider making on
Apple Day, historic re-enactments, working horse displays and charcoal
making in the traditional way. He also hold country fayres and woodland
skills courses. Please enquire for details of events coming up!
