Corinium Museum, Cirencester
Recently
expanded, Corinium museum, with its hands-on exhibits, interactive
displays and wealth of precious artefacts, should be your first stop if
you want to immerse yourself in the story of the Cotswolds from
Prehistory to the late 19th Century.
Similarly, if your interest lies in Roman Britain, then this museum
is a must-see due to its collections celebrating the town's history as
the second largest Roman town, after London. Spread over two floors,
this includes marvellous mosaics, tombstones and sculpture, in addition
to room and shop reconstructions and objects from everyday Roman life.
Moving forward in time, a dramatic new gallery has been created to
house the finds from the Anglo-Saxon cemetery uncovered at Butler's
Field, Lechlade in 1895. Included in the displays are rare, and
beautiful, gold pendants, expert reconstructions of Anlgo-Saxon people
and a reconstruction of Anglo-Saxon princess 'Mrs Getty's' grave, who
was buried with no less than 500 treasures!
Much, much more is waiting to be discovered, so don't delay your visit for a moment longer!
