Winchcombe Folk & Police Museum
Housed inside Winchcombe's Victorian Town Hall, are two fascinating collections..
The Folk Collection covers such intriguing periods of the town's
life as the ancient Neolithic, the Roman interlude, the bloody civil
war and the 17th Century tobacco growing industry - following the story
right up to the two World Wars and the impact of the 20th Century.
In addition to the informative panels on the walls and the
interesting displays crammed with personal, domestic and agricultural
items, you can also flick through the pages of the large selection of
reference folders covering such topics as St. Kenelm and his legend,
memoirs of Winchcombe's residents, past and present, and many 'then and
now' photographs of Winchcombe's streets.
The museum is lucky enough to have received a significant part of
the Simms Collection, which was founded in 1953 by local resident Ross
Simms, featuring police uniforms from around the world, truncheons,
handcuffs and examples of all the other equipment so important in law
enforcement!
